PearlDamour visits schools in all of the Miltons. In Oregon, we have been doing writing and performance workshops with Ms. Baneck’s middle school class based on the play MILTON. Here’s an interview with one of the students in that class –

How old are you?

I am 13 years old and a student in the eighth grade.

What is a dream you have for your life?

The biggest dream for my life is to do something that will make the world a better place.

What’s something new you’d like to try?

I really want to go skydiving someday! I mean how cool would it be to jump out of a plane and then just float down and see the world from so high up.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

When I was a kid I was always convinced that I would be a paleontologist but now I don’t really want to.

In our workshops we ask students to think about who they are and where they come from. Here is a poem Lilee wrote in response to these questions:

I come from Watergate salad being made in my Nana’s chaotic kitchen at Thanksgiving.
I come from sitting on my old, black beanbag, and reading by the light of the three open windows behind me.
I come from hanging out with friends and talking about our favorite BBC tv shows and arguing about stupid stuff.
I come from hearing, “Hi, sugs!” and getting given a hug from my grandpa whenever I visit my Nana’s house.
I come from the worry of grades dropping below an A+.
I come from the fear of packing up and leaving my family, friends, school, home and grandparents behind.
